Saturday, January 21: “A Subterranean Fire: Mass Strikes in US History”

“A Subterranean Fire: Mass Strikes in US History”
A fundraiser dinner for Haymarket Books 10th Anniversary
Saturday, January 21st, 6:00 pm
Workers United Union Hall
750 East Ave, Rochester, NY

Featuring Sharon Smith, author of Subterranean Fire: A History of Working-Class Radicalism in the United States and Women and Socialism: Essays on Women’s Liberation.

Despite decades of triumphant declarations that class struggle is irrelevant and dead n the US, it has returned. Mass protests in Madison, Wisconsin, teachers’ union protests in hundreds of cities and port shutdowns all along the west coast have shown US workers determination to resist the drive for austerity and an economy that serves the interests of the 1%.

Unknown to many, workers in the United States have a rich tradition of fighting back and achieving gains previously thought unthinkable, from the weekend, to health care, to the right to even form a union. Even the Occupy Movement can trace its origins to the Great Sit-down Strike wave of the late 1930’s where millions of workers occupied their workplaces demanding union recognition and better living standards.

Join us for dinner and a presentation by author Sharon Smith about the history of mass strikes in the US.

Co-Sponsors:
The Ronald G. Pettengill Labor Education Fund, the city branch of the International Socialist Organization (ISO), Next Generation United and the Center for Economic Research and Social Change (CERSC)
