Socialists assert that Capitalism and Racism are interwoven, one cannot exist without the other. That we must link the fight against racism and all it's manifestations in a fight against the system that produces them.

Captured in the slogan "Black Lives Matter", the past year has put the struggle against racism, mass incarceration and police violence against black communities back on the political agenda for the first time in a generation.
The victory of SYRIZA in the Greek elections in early 2015 represented the best chance of the Left to turn the tide against the programs of austerity and neoliberalism but the events since then have proven to be a roller coaster with plenty of ups and downs.

At our weekly meeting this Thursday (09/17), the RIT branch of the ISO will be taking up these questions and more:

What even is SYRIZA and why should we care?

How did they even win in the first place?

What happened since then? People are talking about "betrayal"(!)

As US-based socialists, what lessons can we learn from the events?

What's next for the Left in Greece and abroad?

Everyone should make a best effort to read up before-hand (to help better form questions and discussion -- there's a lot to figure out and a world to win, after all):
The racism of police violence. Climate change. Sexism and homophobia. War. Economic inequality. The injustices of American society stand exposed for everyone to see, yet the many apologists for capitalism claim that whatever its defects, there is no alternative to a system that puts corporate greed ahead of human need. We disagree! Come to this meeting to discuss what socialism is and how you can get involved today in the struggle to change the world.
Register today!

Socialism 2015 is a four-day conference bringing together hundreds of socialists and radical activists from around the country to take part in discussions about Marxism, working-class history, and the debates and strategies for organizing today.

Every year, the Socialism conferences aims to be a place where activists can share lessons from their struggles—from the boycott, divestment and sanction campaign for Palestine to the fight for LGBT liberation, from the Fight for 15 to the struggle to stop the destruction of the planet, the fight against racism, and more.

With well over 100 meetings, the weekend will feature left-wing authors and thinkers discussing the debates on the left today, as well as meetings on the hidden history of working-class and socialist struggles.

"It is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard." — Martin Luther King, Jr.

benefit those at the top, and so thoroughly impervious to change from
below, that many people conclude (correctly, in our view): we need to
get rid of the whole system, we need a revolution. But we’ve seen
repeatedly how a willingness to make rebellion from below doesn’t
necessarily lead to successful change. For example, the revolutionary
upsurges of the Arab Spring in 2011 have almost all been rolled back or
derailed to outcomes their initiators had never intended.

How
can we ensure that a future revolt against the present system and its
The people of Greece have voted for radical change in the recent
January elections, giving power to SYRIZA (The Coalition of the
Radical Left). Greece is now the center of growing solidarity among
anti-austerity forces across Europe and also a target for Europe's
rulers who want to make the poor pay for the economic crisis.
Front. Attached are readings in preparation for this discussion. The
articles are of particular relevance in this moment as these ideas are
being revisited as the guiding principles for the revolutionary socialists
strategy in Syriza.
Discussion questions
1. The theory of the workers united front originally developed in the Communist International in the aftermath of the First World War. Why was it so hard to convince many of the communists of its merits?

2. What does it mean to advocate a united front policy in the instance of the struggle against fascism?

3. What does it mean to“use the united front method” even in circumstances when we're not dealing with workers' organizations and trade unions?
streets in the ongoing movement against police brutality the question of
the police and their role in society has taken on new importance. With
the police killing a Black person every 28 hours, a movement is
emerging that challenges the idea of who they protect and who they
serve. The very origins of their institution is saturated with racism
and violence. From their beginning as a force to quell strikes, urban
riots, and the threat of slave insurrection, they have always existed
primarily as enforcers of the 1% and protectors of private property.

the origins and function of the police and their relationship to racism,
In recent years, we've witnessed an escalation in a reactionary push to strip women of the right to control their lives, from politicians seeking to extinguish reproductive freedom, judges siding with corporations against women seeking equal pay and access to healthcare, campus administrations covering up sexual assault, to the threats of violence used to shut down discussion of sexism in popular media.

What will it take put a stop to this trend? How can we bring about genuine women’s liberation? Socialists argue that we need a feminist movement inclusive of all women, that fights for the liberation of women of color, trans women, immigrant women, queer women, indigenous women, women of the Global South. Join us for a discussion of Marxist feminism, and a revolutionary strategy that leaves no woman behind.
rescinded its offer of a tenured professorship to Steven Salaita, a
scholar of American Indian Studies. Dr. Salaita has been an outspoken
critic of Israel and Zionism, and is the author of Israel's Dead Soul. The university's decision to rescind the job offer to Salaita, according to a report in Inside Higher Ed,
was prompted by "the tone of his comments on Twitter about Israel's
policies in Gaza," marked by spontaneous indignation against Israel's
slaughter of Gazans.

A massive public campaign in support of Salaita has now generated more than 15,000
signatures calling for UIUC to
reinstate him. More than 2,000 faculty from around the world have
signed pledges to boycott UIUC until Salaita is given his job back. But Salaita has not been offered his job back, and his status remains uncertain.

Steven Salaita is speaking at the University of Rochester as part of a broader speaking tour. You can’t keep a good idea down. As much as pundits try to declare Marxism dead it's coming back again.

Why? Because it is the best way to understand the insanity of a world governed by an unrelenting drive to profit, and it is a roadmap to fight for a better world. We know that if we let capitalism run its course, it will lead to ruin.

The only alternative is to take back the immense wealth accumulated by a tiny minority at the expense of the majority, and use it to democratically serve human need rather than corporate greed. We call that alternative socialism.

FINALLY GOT THE NEWS is a forceful, unique documentary that reveals the activities of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers inside and outside the auto factories of Detroit. Through interviews with the members of the movement, footage shot in the auto plants, and footage of leafleting and picketing actions, the film documents their efforts to build an independent black labor organization that, unlike the UAW, will respond to worker's problems, such as the assembly line speed-up and inadequate wages faced by both black and white workers in the industry.

Beginning with a historical montage, from the early days of slavery through the subsequent growth and organization of the working class, FINALLY GOT THE NEWS focuses on the crucial role played by the black worker in the American economy. Also explored is the educational 'tracking' system for both white and black youth, the role of African American women in the labor force, and relations between white and black workers.

We live in a world facing environmental destruction from global warming, yet the world’s leaders seem incapable of admitting there’s a problem, let alone acting upon it. Instead, governments push their energy corporations to dig up and burn fossil fuels at ever increasing rates.

Now the race is on worldwide to exploit the filthiest deposits of hydrocarbons, like the tar sands of western Canada or oil shale in Colorado, and squeeze every last bit of profit from vast corporate-owned “reserves”, regardless of the ecological consequences.

Of course environmental activists must mobilize to oppose these developments, whether it’s the Keystone XL pipeline or the expansion of hydrofracking in the Marcellus shale.

But it’s clear that, with its core logic of constant “growth” and profits above all else, the real problem is the way the capitalist system itself works. This leads us to a stark conclusion: if we want preserve a living environment on this planet, we have to get rid of capitalism.

How do we begin the process of mobilizing the people of the world to take power and policy into their own hands, and out of the grasp of the corporate elite leading us toward destruction? Join us as we explore why being an environmental activist is not enough--you should be an ecosocialist.

What lessons can be learned from the revolutions shaking the Middle East? Why is Marxism relevant today?
